Episode 3: The Sins of Past

You don’t need to know, what my name is, or who am I actually! All you need to know is the story I am about to share with you all. The story that matters and the story that needs to be told! We know that sometimes, some things happen with some people that are actually unbelievable, strange and eccentric and this story is no different. These things or the series of events, change us for the better or worse, and decide who we become. So, assuming that you are ready to believe whatever I say and believe the not so obvious, I present to you the story of the unbelievable!!

After the birthday night, things began to get more complicated with Abhay. His migraine attacks worsened and so did his nightmares, except for a one small change: His dreams or nightmares started turning into realities the next day or in the coming days. He at first was reluctant and took the happenings for stronger déjà vu, but then he slowly relented into believing the truth: he could see future! For every sensible human being, this sounds crazy, but he was forced to believe this virtue of the nature, good or bad however, he was confused.

‘Whoa!’ Abhay exclaimed, as he woke up after another nightmare. ‘You got to be kidding me!’

He said that to himself, for whatever he saw in his dream that night was bad enough for anyone. And with his dreams coming true those days, he really wished, that particular dream would never come true. However, hoping for the best, he got readied for the day and along with Ronit went to the radio station as usual and began his day.

‘Good morning guys this is RJ AB on your very own 92.3 Dil se,’ Abhay said in his usual charm as soon as he went on air. ‘So guys even if it isn’t father’s day today, let’s dedicate the day to our fathers. I won’t go into the role of a father now but let’s tell our DADs that we love them even without a father’s day. With the same spirit, coming up next is my favorite, Papa Kehte Hain Bada Naam Karega from Qayamat Se Qayamat Tak. Enjoy!’

Nobody knew, why all of a sudden Abhay decided to dedicate the day to the fathers all over the world. But one thing was known for sure, he missed his own father, he missed his entire family. Remember, I haven’t told you about his actual family yet? Or let’s say Abhay didn’t want to share anything about his family, his past life with anyone, remember? He followed the playlist with ‘Akele Hum Akele Tum’ and other songs that cherished a father’s relationship with his children. He missed his own father, but somewhere somehow; Sharmaji had filled the void in Abhay’s heart that he felt for his father. He could never completely thank Sharmaji for the same.

Well, the next day was Saturday, and Abhay had a day off. So, he decided to take Ritika for shopping and spending some quality time with her. So she came at his home, all ready.

‘Ritika, you wait here, I’ll just be ready in 10 minutes,’ Abhay said.

With this he went upstairs to get his clothes and then into bathroom to change. Ronit called him for some work so he took the cell phone with him to the bathroom, talking to him. He kept the phone aside after the call and was changing when his phone rang again, this time with a ‘PRIVATE NUMBER’ tag.

‘Oh god, not again please!’ Abhay said to himself, terrified, before picking up the call.

‘Hello my dear,’ the same voice greeted him, with the same sinister sweetness. ‘You don’t seem to remember either of Sanjana, The Royal Plaza nor that night, even after my repeated attempts, do you?’

‘W-h-a-t do y-o-u w-a-n-t?’ Abhay screamed, his voice trembling.

‘No, no I don’t want anything my dear,’ the stranger said. ‘It’s just that I want to remind you that the sins of your past don’t leave you easily. They can DESTROY YOU!!!’

‘W-h-a-t!!,’ Abhay screamed again, almost terrified to death. ‘What do you mean?’

‘Ah, that’s pretty simple,’ the voice said, maintaining its evil calmness. ‘‘You know what I mean. Figure it out yourself, goodbye!’

‘What?’ Abhay exclaimed, terrified. ‘Hello, hello! Hello, answer me you bastard! Hello!’

If the stranger’s threats were not enough, he said the same things that he had said in Abhay’s nightmares last night and that too in the same manner, when Abhay was in bathroom, changing. What did he mean by the sins of the past? Did Abhay know about them? Had he committed some sin? Well, Abhay knew exactly what he was talking about, but he was helpless. Nevertheless, one thing was confirmed: Abhay could see future in his dreams cum nightmares and he didn’t know whether to be happy or sad about it. He slowly was getting frustrated.

However, he composed himself like he had been doing for some months now, and came out to find his room being ransacked. He looked around and saw Ritika secretly searching his closet, like a pussy cat, resembling snowbell from Stuart Little. She really looked cute like that.

‘What presumably are you doing here?’ Abhay asked, looking confused. ‘You won’t find any love letters or any such thing here dear.’

‘Whoa,’ Ritika exclaimed, suddenly seeing Abhay behind her, catching her red - handed. ‘When did you come out? I was just, umm-’

‘-looking for your birthday present,’ Abhay said, interrupting her and smiling playfully with a smug. ‘But like the past 6 years, you won’t find it even this time before your birthday!’

‘God damn it yaar,’ she said, sheepishly. ‘You caught me again!’

Well yeah, Abhay and Ronit always had her birthday gifts secretly planned and she always tried to get hold of them before her birthday and failed, and this time it was no different.

‘Now stop being Sherlock Holmes and let’s go,’ Abhay said, pulling her out of the room.

They then went for a movie, had some shopping and were having lunch at the same mall.

‘Now this, is for you,’ Abhay said, taking out a plush box, from his jeans pocket.

‘God, Abhay, if you would just shower your love for any other girl by just fraction of what you do for me, you would get a 1000 girlfriends stupid!’ she said, as she unwrapped the box. ‘My god, this is beautiful! Love you brother!’

It turned out that the box carried a beautiful gold ring, holding a small diamond. She hugged him tightly and then it occurred to them that they were late for the appointment with the doctor, treating Abhay’s migraine problem.

‘Oh dear’ she said. ‘We are already late for the appointment. C’mon get up now.’

Now before he could get up, the pain in his head shoot up again. And yeah, it remained terrible as ever.

‘Fuck you migraine,’ Abhay yelled, holding his head between both his hands tightly.

The pain continued for another 10-15 minutes and Ritika was worried as hell, but then it subsided and they left the cafeteria. Now they were climbing down the stairs to the basement parking and Ritika was in a terrible hurry to visit the doctor on time when god knows how, she slipped from the stairs suddenly and went down rolling to the basement through the stairs. She supposedly hit her head on one of the stairs.

‘Ritika!!’ Abhay screamed as he ran down the stairs to find her unconscious. There was a terrible wound on her forehead that might have formed when her head hit the stairs. He took her to the hospital, and called in Sharmaji and Ronit. She was admitted and her treatment began at once.

‘Don’t worry Abhay,’ Sharmaji said, ruffling his hairs as they waited outside Ritika’s ward. ‘She will be alright, I talked with the doctors. We both are here for you.’

‘And you know Abhay, problems in life are like RD (Recurring Deposit) installments at banks,’ Sharmaji continued. ‘Whenever you have to face them, you feel the pain. But then later on in the life, when you have no clue, they mature and support you, making you happy. For RDs, they help monetarily and problems make you stronger, again helping you.’

Ronit didn’t say much. But Abhay was broke; he almost lost his consciousness and cried loudly, wailing hard. Sharmaji took him in his arms, and was constantly trying to soothe him down. Ritika had been Abhay’s life agreed, but Sharmaji provided for a strong foundation and strength whenever the things went awry. He never said that aloud, but Abhay didn’t know what could have his life been without this one man- Sharmaji.

‘Hey, get up Abhay,’ Ronit said. ‘Stop crying, here have something. You haven’t eaten anything since noon.’

Well, yeah it was 9 o’clock, night and Abhay had been without food since noon, when he brought Ritika to the hospital. The injury on her forehead had led to fever and she was still unconscious. So, he didn’t eat anything, out of worry. Ronit knew Abhay wouldn’t have full meal until Ritika gained consciousness, so he had brought apples. He was cutting one, when he accidently slit his hand and it started bleeding.

‘Holly shit,’ Abhay yelled, broken. ‘Somebody is got to be kidding me. Sharmaji, try to stop the bleeding, I will get a doctor meanwhile.’

The doctor then performed required first-aid on Ronit, and asked Abhay to get the required medicines for Ritika from the medical store, downstairs. As Abhay went down, his phone rang again and no doughnuts for guessing, who was the caller.

‘So, didn’t I tell you about your sins affecting you, earlier this morning?’ the stranger spoke over the phone. ‘Seems like they affect your loved ones too. First Ritika was critically injured, now Ronit slit his hand accidently, now wonder what will happen to Sharmaji!’

‘S-h-u-t the f-u-c-k up!!’ Abhay yelled loudly, crying. ‘So you were behind all this! What do you want? Please tell me, I beg you!!’

‘Don’t be so desperate my dear. I just want one thing that you can afford easily,’ the stranger said, with his sinister giggles again. ‘I want you dead! Kill yourself!’

And yeah, he cut the call again. And left Abhay wondering what had just transpired. He tried to lodge a police complaint but then decided against it, for he knew the stranger somehow had the key to his past. He delivered the medicines upstairs and left for a stroll, to ponder. After seriously contemplating for an hour or two, he made up his mind. If his death was all that it took to ensure his loved ones’ safety, so be it! He decided to commit suicide, but he needed to see Ritika one last time. And thankfully, she gained her consciousness and was quite well now, according to the doctors.

‘I am sorry Ritika,’ he said, holding her palm in both his hands as he sat around her bed. ‘You are here because of me. I am really sorry.’

‘And I am thankful to you for this ring. I’ll burn the swag out of everyone with this,’ she said, being her usual self, giggling. ‘Don’t be stupid now idiot, whatever happened was meant to happen sooner or later. Don’t blame yourself instead grant me one wish, if you are really sorry.’

‘Oh, sure,’ Abhay said, wiping his teary eyes. ‘What do you want?’

‘Promise me that you won’t leave me ever, whatever the situation is,’ she said, calmly.

Now for someone, who has made up his mind to embrace death, this certainly was the most difficult promise to make. But then he thought for a second and imagined what Ritika, Sharmaji and Ronit would be like if they found him dead. The expressions on their faces certainly didn’t please him, so he decided to scrap the decision of embracing the death.

‘Yep,’ he said, kissing her palm. ‘I will always be there to pester the hell out of you!’

They both had their moments and eventually Ritika fell asleep. Abhay too slipped away to sleep and he had another goddamn nightmare, which meant the possible future:

It was night and a man like figure, with its face covered in a black mask was approaching Sharmaji, who was flinching back, terrified. He then got up and began running, trying to escape this strange man. The surroundings seemed familiar but Abhay couldn’t make out exactly, where it was happening. Eventually the man found Sharmaji, and shot him in the head with his strange gun, thrice. A fountain of blood erupted from Sharmaji’s head, as he fell down on the ground, with a scream, lifeless.

‘Who the hell are you??’ Abhay screamed, and the figure turned back to him. ‘Sharmaji! What did you do to Sharmaji??’

As Abhay tried to run towards the lifeless Sharmaji, a dart like something pierced Abhay at his neck, rendering him partially paralyzed. His vision started to blur. He limped for a certain distance and then fell on his knees on the ground. Abhay was still eager to see this man who killed his father figure brutally. He was enraged and wanted to kill that man at once. The man then approached him, came near him and removed his mask. If the sins of past could affect him in such a manner, to Abhay’s surprise, it was a girl and not a man and he had known that face better than anyone else. The girl scoffed with a smug as Abhay began to pass into a trance.

It was Ritika!
