Episode 7: The Killer inside Me

You don’t need to know, what my name is, or who am I actually! All you need to know is the story I am about to share with you all. The story that matters, and the story that needs to be told! We know that sometimes, some things happen with some people that are actually unbelievable, strange and eccentric and this story is no different. These things or the series of events, change us for the better or worse, and decide who we become. So, assuming that you are ready to believe whatever I say and believe the not so obvious, I present to you the story of the unbelievable!!

01st January, 2009:  The next day of  New Year eve (Almost 6 years ago from the day on the island):

'W

here the hell is she?’ Abhay yelled as he regained his senses. ‘Where is Sanjana? What have you people done to her?’

No reply. Abhay had been on that place for quite some hours, all strapped and bound to that wooden chair and every organ of his body aching hard then. And he knew something was terribly wrong, for the last thing that he remembered was seeing the man Timothy Francis standing in front of him all hale and hearty, who was supposedly dead- whom he had shot, thrice himself. He was sweating badly and his muscles were slowly giving away as the pain took better of them slowly. He was trying to comprehend the rut he was in when the same scenario struck again. A bunch of flood lights lit up, rendering him partially blind as the atmosphere inside began to heat up with the lights radiating terrible heat waves.

‘Doing good Mr. Singhania, aren’t we?’ a man asked him, as he entered the place.

He was the same bald man: Timothy Francis.

‘What the hell are you doing here?’ Abhay said, grunting as he pointlessly tried to get away from the ropes, bounding him to that chair. ‘Where am I? What place is this? Where is Sanjana?’

‘Ah, the same inquisitive and restless Abhay that you are,’ Timothy said, as he leaned over to Abhay. ‘But shouldn’t your question be of why are you here in the first place, sir?’

‘You slimy piece of meat and bones,’ Abhay yelled as he tried to kick Timothy but his legs gave away due to the severe pain.

‘Easy, easy my dear,’ Timothy said, with his evil grin. ‘Don’t stress your body too much. A human body can’t withstand so much pain even if you are the chosen first warrior: the Abhay Singhania!’

‘I’ll kill you bastard!’ Abhay said, grunting again as he tried to release himself. ‘How come are you still alive damn it? I shot you myself and there is no chance that anybody could’ve survived those shots’

‘You’ve already killed me once dear,’ Timothy said, with his terrifying calmness. ‘Anyways, we all have our secrets Mr. Singhania, don’t we?

With this, he left the premises, and Abhay kept shouting, pleading him to stop. Soon the lights were switched off again and slowly the darkness seeped into the room and into Abhay’s heart. He wondered about the kind of situation he possibly was in. He had no clue about his whereabouts, the girl who a few moments ago had proposed him was nowhere to be seen and moreover the guy he had killed a few years back was standing alive in front of him.

‘Abhay, are you there?’ his chain of thoughts was soon interrupted by a familiar female voice. It was Sanjana. ‘Is anyone here?’

Abhay was both happy and startled at once. He couldn’t understand the exact complexity of the situation then. Before he could react, the lights were switched on again. And eventually when his eyes adjusted to the surroundings and as he looked around the place, he saw Sanjana, lying on the other corner of the room, strapped to the chair like him.

‘Sanjana!’ Abhay exclaimed out of euphoria. ‘Are you alright dear?’

‘Well, I am,’ she said, as she gasped for breaths, panting heavily. ‘It’s just that I am having this severe breathing problem.’

‘Welcome back miss Kashyap,’ a male voice echoed around the room, before Abhay could speak. ‘Just for your info, the breathing problem is the result of the drug you were just injected with. And I swear, if you don’t cooperate, the problem will aggravate soon.’

‘Now who the freaking hell is this??’ Abhay screamed. ‘This needs to stop right now!’

‘Ah, well I guess it could Mr. Singhania,’ Timothy’s voice infested the room like plague, from the speakers present in the room. ‘I too wish for it to end soon sir.’

‘What do you want?’ Sanjana yelled. ‘And who are you?’

‘Just answers to a few questions and that will be the end of it,’ the voice said again.

‘To begin with, why did you kill my brother, Mr. Singhania?’

‘So, this is about him, now I get it. I didn’t kill him damn it,’ Abhay shot back. ‘He pounced over the death himself.’

‘Yeah right,’ the voice yelled, slimed with irony. ‘You two supposedly killed me and you two were the reasons behind my brother’s death as well.’

‘So, this is Timothy Francis, isn’t it? Abhay killed you right there, how the hell are you still alive, damn it??!’ Sanjana, who was silently witnessing the drama, screamed.

‘That’s what you both do the best right?’ the voice screamed, laced with hatred. ‘He might have embraced death himself, but it was you who forced him into such a situation!’

‘Nobody forced him to do what he did, damn you Timothy!’ Sanjana yelled.

‘It was the intoxication of your sudden mystic powers, wasn’t it?’ Timothy’s voice said again. ‘All the mystic powers that the island of Aṟputaṅkaḷ commanded, right?’

‘You are blowing it all out of proportion Timothy,’ Abhay said. ‘We were on the island for a purpose that none of us chose to be a part of, you know that.’

‘Yeah only till you were too swayed away with the charm of the island to notice anything,’ the voice said. ‘Too swayed to resist betraying me.’

‘You betrayed us Timothy,’ Sanjana yelled. ‘We never did.’

‘Whatever bitches,’ Timothy’s voice said again. ‘Tit for tat, right Abhay? That’s what you believe in, don’t you? Now you too will die like my brother. Tit for tat.’

‘If you as much as just touch me Timothy-’ Sanjana was about to say something, when he cut her short.

‘Your father will make my worse than death, right Sanjana?’ Timothy said. ‘Yeah well, been there, done that bitch. Honestly speaking, that whacko- your father is the most terrifying man that I’ve ever met. Just imagine, if he can brutally leave me castrated for just trying to rape you, what will he do with the man who murders you?!! Just imagine!!’

As he said that, his evil laughs filled the room and soon they were damped down and nothing was heard after it. Soon, two masked man entered the room with what looked like a silver briefcase and hit Abhay hard.

‘You don’t dare to touch him, damn it!’ Sanjana shouted as one of the men forcefully injected Abhay with something, while the other kept holding him, restricting his movements.

Abhay felt terrible pain as he was being injected and he saw Sanjana being manhandled by one of the few men that had then entered the premises. He saw Sanjana looking at him, with love and pain filled in her eyes that were glistening with tears when soon, the darkness took control of his body and he was left unconscious.

The next thing Abhay remembered was that he woke up on a deserted place resembling a deserted shipping port in the middle of night. He wasn’t himself that night for sure. He got up, his head twisted hard similar to the after effects of a terrible hangover. He tried to walk but cold only slouch as he staggered towards someone, with a long rod like a harpoon in his hand. He couldn’t see clearly, maybe the hangover was still heavy on his head.

Staggering his way towards the dockyard, he saw Sanjana, lying there handcuffed and her forehead bleeding a little, as tears accompanied her eyes. She was mumbling something, as Abhay staggered towards her like a zombie, without emotions.

‘No Abhay,’ she was imploring, as she tried to get up. ‘Please, for god’s sake don’t kill me. I love you Abhay please! I-’

Before she could say something, he smashed his harpoon towards her, as a shrill cry left her body and his legs gave away as he fell down, unconscious. He woke up soon, it was morning. As he stood up, he tried to recollect the events of the previous night. His hard ached hard, and before he could comprehend anything, a streamline of blood came flowing near him. Horrified, he got up at once to find Sanjana lying in a pool of blood lifeless behind him, with the Harpoon stabbed into her chest.

He had killed her. He had murdered her brutally and he at once knew it. That was the most gruesome murder he could’ve witnessed. All of her cries from the previous night when she had begged his mercy tore his ears apart. He slouched near his lifeless angel and felt nauseated at the horrifying scenery. Devastated, he was about to touch her lifeless body for once, may be crush her into his arms for one last time, when he heard police sirens wailing hard.

He knew that the police was coming to nab him for the murder of a girl he had loved from the core of his heart. Although reluctant at first, in the moment of heat, panic and paranoia he then made a choice that changed his life for the years to come. He decided to abscond. He looked at her lifeless remains for one last time and then he ran. He ran till his legs gave away and a dart like something pierced his neck, as he went into a state of coma.

Abhay then woke up at his home, all panicked and confused. He knew he had murdered her. He knew he was there with her at that strange place, But then at that particular moment, he was at his home! How did he lend there from nowhere? May it was just a bad nightmare! But no, it wasn’t, as was evident from a letter he found lying beside him. The letter read:

You know you’ve killed the girl who loved you more than anything else in the world. The police will find you sooner or later. And even if they don’t, her father surely will and believe me he will make your life a living hell. Enclosed herewith are an address and some money. Just leave the town and settle with Mr. Sharma as his tenant at the given address, miles away from the town. Don’t panic, your dark secret is safe with me.

Don’t try to contact me ever.

Abhay looked within the envelope and found an address and some money. He decided to revisit all the moments from where it had all began- that New Year eve! But he was in the state of interminable shock and paranoia when he couldn’t remember a single thing before that New Year Eve. He tried harder, all devastated and paranoid but to no avail. He didn’t know where he belonged from, who his family members were and where had he been before that fateful evening. He didn’t know how had he met Sanjana for the first time but he knew he loved her madly and that he had killed her. His all life had been just reduced to a night of 31st December’ 08, for he had no idea of anything about his life before it. It was as if somebody had erased his entire memory before the events of the New Year eve.

Abhay didn’t want to trust the letter he had, but he had no options left either. So, eventually he packed his bags and left the town to go to the address that the letter had given him.

‘I am Abhay Singhania. I am err-’ Abhay said to a man in his early 60s who opened the door at the address that the letter had asked him to go to.

‘Ah, right,’ the old man said. ‘I’ve been expecting you son since morning. The broker told me about your arrival yesterday. I am Chandrashekar Sharma, your landlord, people call me Sharmaji.’

‘Nice to meet you Sharmaji,’ Abhay said, faking gratitude.

He then entered the house and surprisingly the police verification and other formalities too were taken care of by the so called broker, without any hassle. He then met Ronit, who soon became his brother for life and Sharmaji soon replaced the void for a parent in Abhay’s life. Since then, he had evaded everyone on anything related to his past life, for he himself didn’t know about it. It was after a few months that he met a girl, who changed his life for better.

‘Hi,’ she had said. ‘I’m Ritika Malhotra, I’ve just shifted here at the C block.’

Nobody knew how but they both connected instantly and it was just a matter of few months that they became inseparable buddies. Soon they became soul mates to each other and had developed a strong bond that transcended all limits that the human relations had ever known. Needless to say, they had the purest relation on earth between them: of a brother and sister and it had connected them together for many lives to come. Although there wasn’t a single day that Abhay hadn’t felt guilty about killing his love- Sanjana, Ritika’s love and care for him had overshadowed his guilt. Then one day she had gifted her with a strange present.

‘Here, this is for you,’ Ritika had said then, as she gifted Abhay with the present. ‘Happy friendship day brother.’

‘What is it?’ Abhay had asked, confused.

‘I think you’ll love it,’ she had said. ‘Now open it na!’

‘Oh, wow it’s a novel,’ Abhay had said, as he had half unwrapped the gift. ‘Thanks dear.’

However, the title of the novel had soon made him tremble. It was a 1952 novel by American author Jim Thompson. The title of the novel made Abhay realize who he really was. Abhay kept looking at the novel, as he hugged Ritika hard, just to evade what he was.

‘The Killer inside Me’ the title of the novel read.
