Episode 14: A blast from the past!

Much like the Newton’s third law of motion for actions and reactions, even in life, any new event has equally impending implications; implications that might shock you, or might lift your dead spirits. Most events occur as the result of our actions in the present but what about the events springing from the past? What it is like to have a certain aspect from your past revisit you? Shock or excitement, it doesn’t matter, but a blast from the past leaves ripples large enough to disrupt the present and the future….!!

‘What the hell?’ Simons was obviously startled at seeing Abhay or at least a figure that looked like Abhay, faint in front of him. So he yelled. He was startled and needless to say, his mind was hunting for ways to escape this new found information.

‘No!’ It was Ritika’s turn to evade the shock that her eyes were presenting in front of her. Naturally, her yelling was louder than Simons’. ‘This is impossible!!! You hear me? THIS… IS… IMPOSSIBLE…!!! He DIED! He bloody died in front of my own goddamned eyes, that day!’

The strong flow of adrenaline rushing through their veins was terrifying. But before they could let their insides let the new chain of events sink in, as invariably as it has happened in past, a smooth and buttery voice broke their reverie.

‘People die Miss Ritika! They die all the time,’ the room echoed with a sinisterly soft voice. ‘But in our world, they do end up being resurrected too, although not that often. I expected the likes of you to know it!’

The sweet texture of the voice was although placating but it had a sense of malicious complacence that made it unbearably terrifying.

‘Now, who the hell is it?’ Simons yelled, afraid that he already knew the answer.

‘Once a crackpot, always a crackpot now, isn’t it Simons?’ the room echoed again. ‘You do know who I’m. You just don’t want to believe it, aren’t I right here, my dear?’

‘What the hell is happening here?’ Poor Ritika could only yell, considering she knew what they had gotten themselves into. ‘Who is it?’

‘Funny you should ask this Ritika,’ the room echoed again as one of the walls suddenly lit up as an LCD screen and a figure with almost all the face burnt up appeared on the screen. He continued, ‘We used to be really close dear, weren’t we?’

Both of them clinched their fists and closed their eyes to let the gravity of the situation sink in, as their worst fear was realized – it was Timothy Francis! The guy looked evil with his disgusting face all burnt up, revealing the muscles beneath the skin as he yelled, with flakes of skin fluttering with it.

‘Oh no no no! Don’t close your eyes now,’ he continued, ‘why would you do that? Look at me! Look at this beautiful face here now, look at it!!!!’

They were reeling from the shock when suddenly Abhay’s body started writhing in pain and he began to mumble things. ‘Whoa!’ he suddenly woke up with a jolt. ‘What the –’ he looked around himself, surprised.

‘And the first warrior to the rescue again, as always!’ Timothy continued in his sweet yet malignant voice. ‘Welcome your highness!’

‘Abhay?’ Ritika gasped as she saw him again. ‘Is that really you?’ She went and hugged him tightly, while Simons stood there, still confused and unable to process anything.

‘Oh Ritika!’ Abhay said, as he crushed her in his arms. ‘I so wanted to –’

He was interrupted by Timothy. ‘Enough with the melodrama already!!’ he yelled. ‘I ought to give this bastard a ton of applaud for pulling such an enormous sham here!’

‘What do you mean?’ Simons barked.

‘Oh you still don’t get it, do you? You haven’t changed a bit crackpot, I’ll give you that!’ Timothy sniggered.

‘Why can’t you shut up?’ Abhay said, as he broke the hug. ‘Just shut up for once!’

‘Ah right, captain!’ Timothy continued, ‘Giving orders with the same apathy with which you shot my brother and then faked your own death, years later! You knew that you wouldn’t die there! You knew you will come back!’

‘This is for the hundredth time that I’m telling you that I had no idea of any of this Timothy!!’ Abhay said, restraining his anger.

‘The hell you didn’t! You knew the island has powers! You knew the island could absorb and deliver the life energy! You knew you’ll be resurrected again when Ronit died for you, so stop with the drama already!!’

‘OK what the hell is going on here, seriously???!!!’ Ritika and Simons both thundered together.

‘Ah right, you poor, poor souls!’ Timothy said as he burst into laughter. ‘You have no idea, do you? See the island that you were on – our favorite, favorite island? It has this amazing ability to store the life energies that escape the body when somebody dies! And if somebody would sacrifice himself for you, all you need to do is bring back their life energy and transfer it to you own body when you die! So in a way, Ronit literally sacrificed himself for our douchebag here, so that he could live!’

‘So you’re saying that my captain lived because Ronit died for him and his life energy was given to captain?’ Simons looked puzzled.

‘Not lived, technically. He was dead, somebody had to resurrect him with Ronit’s life energy but yeah, pretty much the same. You see, when this asshole killed me years ago, my brother took the bullet for me, so that I could live. And so his life energy was available for me. And so when this asshole killed me, by the grace of the magical powers of the island and my lord, I was resurrected!’

‘How did you find him then?’ Ritika was confused.

‘Oh I knew that somebody will resurrect him anyhow. His friend had died for him so that’s safe and logical to assume that somebody from the team would come and restore his life from Ronit’s life energy. All I had to do was find him! And what fun I’ve had with him, for the last 1 year that I’ve had him!!’

‘What did you do to him???’ Simons barked again. ‘I’ll fucking kill you, if you have as much as touched my captain!’

‘Easy, wild hound easy!’ Timothy’s calm was terrifying. ‘The things that I did to him are all safely locked up in the same part of his the brain where all his past memories are – away from him as if they never happened. He doesn’t remember a thing. But it will all tear up one day when the time is right and all the pain and the suffering that I had so much fun inflicting upon him, will be back, as if it’s happening all over again! He will live through all those hellish moments once again, completely!! And that’s not still the evilest thing I can think of!’

Everyone looked at him, confused.

‘Oh right!’ he continued, ‘What do you do when you need to give a stray dog a miserable death? You don’t kill him yourself, but you unleash a wilder beast upon him, to haunt him, make him suffer and kill him. And I’ve done just that! This will be so much fun to watch!!’

He began to laugh like a maniac again as everyone tried to decipher what he had said and then he spoke again. ‘Oh and also I haven’t brought you here to kill you, no, no, no!’ he marvelled at his self-proclaimed brilliance. ‘I just brought you here to handle you this idiotic piece of crap back to you, so that you all can be a part of his sufferings to come! And so, good luck with that! Until the next time idiots!’

As he said that, suddenly the LCD flickered off and the lights were switched off too. He was gone and they were free, although momentarily.

‘What happens now?’ Abhay asked.

‘Now we go back home,’ Ritika said, with glistening eyes as she kissed his forehead, ‘and celebrate the fact that you are alive, you moron!’

‘What about the suffering and the wild beast that the bastard was blabbering about?’ Simons was a bit worried.

‘We’ll tackle it, together!’ Abhay said, as all of them smiled.

So, sometimes a blast from the past can bring back with itself a flood of emotions so wide that you feel shocked, surprised, happy, terrified and emotional – all at the same time. You become happy about one thing and are afraid about the changes that will follow after it. But that’s just it; things happen if they are meant to be. And like I said, shock or excitement, it doesn’t matter, but a blast from the past leaves ripples large enough to disrupt the present and the future….!!

Far away at an industrial site, a huge figure covered in overcoat entered the premises. He looked large enough to frighten anyone for a second but he was still a human being, his face covered with a large hood over the overcoat. He started walking to the main gate when the security guard stopped him.

‘Where to sir? Your ID?’ the poor guy said.

‘Nice city you’ve here,’ the bulky guy thundered in a monstrous voice, strong enough to send chills down your spine. He then grabbed the face of the security guard and suddenly the guard’s face began to dry up, with cracks forming on the face as he cried and writhed in pain. And within seconds his dried up skin fell down from his skull like dust, on the ground, as the guard stopped struggling and so did his heart.

The monstrous figure than threw the dead guard aside and entered the gates. As he walked inside, a photograph slipped away from his overcoat and fell on the ground. It was an old photograph of Abhay with Ritika, Ronit and Vodka!
